How it works

How workers' comp treatment works with us.

New Jersey law gives your employer or their insurance carrier the right to direct non-emergency medical care after a workplace injury. Here's exactly how that works with our office.

1

Report the injury first

Tell your employer about the injury right away — this starts the claim and is required before non-emergency treatment can be authorized.

2

Confirm authorization

Your employer or their workers' comp carrier directs you to an authorized treating provider. If that's Madison Medical, have them contact us directly to authorize care.

3

Evaluation & treatment plan

We evaluate the work injury, build a treatment plan, and communicate findings directly to the carrier or case manager — not just to you.

4

Coordinated return-to-work care

Ongoing treatment, work-status updates, and functional progress reporting, aimed at a safe and timely return to work.

Before your first visit

What to bring to your first visit

Important: Under New Jersey law, your employer or their insurance carrier generally has the right to direct your medical treatment for a work injury (N.J.S.A. 34:15-15) — except in a true emergency. If you haven’t been formally authorized to treat with us yet, call our office first; we’ll help confirm authorization with your employer or carrier before your visit so your treatment is properly covered.

Workers' compensation FAQs

Straight answers to the questions employees ask most, so there's no confusion before your first authorized visit.

Can I just walk in and be treated for a work injury?

For a true emergency, yes — seek immediate care. For non-emergency treatment, New Jersey law generally requires your employer or their workers’ comp carrier to direct you to an authorized provider first. Call us and we’ll help coordinate that authorization directly with your employer or carrier.

What if my employer hasn't sent me anywhere for treatment yet?

Report the injury to your employer as soon as possible — this is required to start your claim. If your employer isn’t providing direction on treatment, let us know; there are specific circumstances where you’re permitted to seek care on your own.

Will I have to pay for my visits?

Authorized workers’ compensation treatment for a covered work injury is provided at no cost to you — it’s billed directly to the employer’s insurance carrier. Treatment received without authorization may not be covered, which is why confirming authorization first matters.

Can I choose Madison Medical as my treating provider?

Under New Jersey law, the employer or carrier generally selects the authorized treating physician. If you’d like to request us, ask your employer or adjuster to direct your care to Madison Medical — we’re glad to coordinate with them directly.

What happens if I disagree with my treatment plan?

You have the right to raise concerns about your care, and in some cases to request a formal review. We recommend discussing this with your employer’s carrier or a workers’ compensation attorney if you feel your treatment isn’t addressing your injury.

Do you communicate with my employer or the insurance adjuster directly?

Yes — with proper authorization in place, we report findings, treatment plans, and work-status updates directly to the carrier, case manager, or employer, so nobody is stuck relaying information back and forth.

How quickly can I be seen once care is authorized?

Most authorized referrals are seen the same week, and we prioritize urgent occupational injuries to keep your claim and your recovery moving without delay.
